Kraken AK-47 vs. Lycaon MP5

i've heard really great things about the kraken, as far as reliability is concerned. does anyone know how the lycaon (mp5) by aftermath compares? i know they're both rebranded cyma models but i couldn't really find any info on the stock reliability, and i am not 100% sure what changes were made from the cyma models that might affect reliablility.

i'm essentially looking for a gun that doesn't need to shoot 400+ fps, but won't break 10 minutes out of the box.

also, these guns are the ones i am interested in. please avoid telling me to uy a TM or any other gun you might want to recommend instead, thanks :)

Donster April 24th, 2008 14:05

technically, they both suck compared to other mainstream brands like TM, CA, G&P etc. but between the two, get a kraken.

EDIT: with these types of guns, it is really the luck of the draw as to whether or not they will break out of the box. some do some dont. Some last 100 rounds, others last thousands. if you upgrade it out of the box, you will avoid the problems but then why not just get another gun?

stevesawatsky April 24th, 2008 14:20

to be honest, and i know you asc types will rape me for this, i just don't have the money now. so i wanted to buy a cheap upgradable gun that i can fix when it breaks, but can use for a bit till i have the cash.

TokyoSeven April 24th, 2008 14:29

Purchase whatever one you like the look of. I recommend the kraken. Use it till it explodes or funnel money into upgrading it. Honestly I would never bother upgrading a lower end gun. Thats a personal prefernce. However changing out things like bushings and reshimming is not an upgrade but preventative maintenance in my opinion.

Amos April 24th, 2008 14:54

Krakens make a very decent upgrade platform... But make sure you know what you're doing.

at this point, i don't know what i'm doing. but how else could i learn? i'd rather learn on a $200 gun than a $600 dollar gun.
unless you guys offer classes haha

Donster April 24th, 2008 16:39

fill out your user profile so then you can contact a local gun doc.

FiveFingers April 24th, 2008 22:11

i have the lycaon mp5... for a first gun it dose the job. but i learned alot about it being cheep. i had to replace the cutoff lever and since i had to do that i swapped the plastic bushings for metal. now it's my back up or loaner gun. the cutoff actually broke on me during an ops... thank god i had my tac1 springer as a backup. if you are willing to spend $150 to $180 on an aeg save up a few more dollars and get a jg i got my 416 for $350 and for that price you get a very good and decent quality gun.

pusangani April 24th, 2008 22:14

+1 for Krakens

FiveFingers April 24th, 2008 22:19

oh yeah i handled a kraken and it is better than the mp5 but it needs to be preped or it might fall apart on you while your on field

Jayne Finch April 25th, 2008 23:48

i love my kraken never tried the lycaon. but if you want a decent little starter or loaner go for it.

AXe Hound May 13th, 2008 21:22

i would have to say the kraken there are just so many parts for it that it makes so easy to up grade

i've heard CA has a reputation for being terribly unreliable?

Dusti69 May 14th, 2008 01:28

sorry my comp crashed before i could edit my post and finish

get the kraken. start out with replacing the bushings, and advice directly from amos: buy a decent replacement piston head. shop ehobbyasia. their prices are good
gigaknight posted this for me in one of my threads. it will help
http://www.mechbox.com/site/mechbox-...ade-video.html

i think the krakens mag holds something like 1000 bbs. ive had my mag filled and emptied several times this month just having fun shooting it. no problems other than a slight drop in fps

stevesawatsky May 14th, 2008 18:15

how hard is it to replace a piston head? it doesn't seem like it would be too difficult to a beginner who is mechanically inclined. i'm staying out of the mechbox though...

Dusti69 May 14th, 2008 18:20

oh man. if you just open the gearbox up and just look at everything for a while til you get familiar with whats in there and after youve watched the vid i posted once or twice the contents of the gearbox arent so intimidating anymore
replacing the piston head didnt look too hard from the way they showed you in the vid but they only showed taking it off and not putting a new one on

if you think you cant do that then just buy a whole piston. i would imagine its jsut a simple swap of parts. im looking to change the one in my kraken sometime

Muffin May 14th, 2008 18:29

In order to change a piston head you need to open up your mechbox.
www.mechbox.com is your friend.

you can't do both of those at the same time, you will need to open the mechbox shell to remove/replace the piston head

Ak-47 or Lyacon

personally I suggest that you should get the kraken

I own it myself and it is really good. I had it for almost a year and
no problems showed up. I dont always use it but I fired about 20000 rounds
and its fine. you can get a replacement motor if it dies. im also happy that its a marui clone so you can upgrade it:p

Im plannin to get the drum mag from airsoftsglobal, extra batterie from buyairsoft.ca, and a metal body kit instead of the plastic from Redwolf airsoft.

Crunchmeister July 4th, 2008 13:41

Holy fuck, what is it today with noobs ressurecting dead threads? Geez guys. Take a look at the last post date. If it's over a month old, don't bring it up unless you have some significant or valuable information to add.

As for the battery, NEVER get the shit they sell from buyairsoft.ca. All their airsoft stuff is overpriced and garbage. As for the metal body, you can't order any metal bodies from outside the country, as they will get seized by customs.

CycloneCyno August 30th, 2008 12:01

Go with the kraken no question it looks great, its sturdy, reliable and ive shot thousands of rounds with one jam( testing how long till fully auto jams)

There you have it.

EDIT: Damnit too slow.

Dusti69 August 30th, 2008 12:23

so im guessing redwolf doesnt sell metal recievers? or if they do it wont make it over the border?

Crunchmeister August 30th, 2008 12:26

Correct. Metal receivers will be seized by customs.

tycho August 30th, 2008 12:28

cmon, I thought my zombie pic was pretty good :<

Dusti69 August 30th, 2008 12:28

I purchased the Broxa Evolution from BassPro. Nice gun. Killbucket has a test of the Broxa where he puts a tub of .12 rounds through it for 3+ minutes (Until it runs out of ammo or he gets bored is what he says) I have to say Wow the gun holds up to full auto file on this acid test.

apparently the rumor is that all that was wrong with the Lyconan was fixed in the Broxa.

so far the only parts that I don't think will hold up on the broxa is

the crap winder hicap clip.. pure crap dont bother just trash it right off
and the front Foregrip I took it off to paint and can see the seam when I picked it up to flip for paint I guess I pressed on a part i should not have and I heard a creak... did not break and it feels solid on the gun but I ordered an aluminum part for it anyway...

very good platform... need to get a muzzle reducer for it for inside. I hope to chrono it this weekend at a scrim so will see the FPS. the Mfr says 400 will see...

Very nice gun though

Painted mine with Krylon Camo ultra flat black very nice look and feel now
