Think of the awesome possibilities.

Fake gold bricks, tacky golden guns, blingin plate carriers.

I have found that DUPLI-COLOR chrome will give you real, mirror-like chrome effect, however the gold version isn't as good.
... apply it on a black base coat for better effect.

I would use something non-toxic in a case any of your friends lick it.

Only way to have it look like real polished gold would be to buy a Steel receiver strip it to bare metal and have it brush electroplated with gold then clear coated. Paints always will look fake and frankly look like utter crap. Your best bet for painted surface would be to undercoat with a primer then use a high chrome style gold paint then finish with high gloss clear, this technique is often used in Automotive applications but it still will not have the same look as actual gold, it will resemble pyrite or a flecked gold surface.

Another technique (albeit insanely expensive) would be to apply several layers of gold leaf and then polish the surface gently then apply a clear coat.

Gold leaf.

Maybe the chrome paint like jimski said with a transparent gold candy coat.

Gunfights must be kind of awkward with the added quick polishing with a rag
during a magazine change,...
