IF the battery has been mis handled it could be a broken joint or just a shitty/old battery.

If you have another battery, try it in the rifle and see if it also heats up.

Take apart the rifle and inspect the wiring. Try spinning the gears in the mechmox by hand to see if its snagging anywhere, that would cause the motor to bog down and draw more amps as it tries to push through the snag.

As Spawn said, could also be a poor solder joint, if you know how to properly inspect a soldering job you should notice it easily.
