Totally agree, dude. A few of us are now using Kenwood TH-G71A radios, totally unlocked at 6W, UHF\VHF. We've programmed in all the GMRS and FRS frequencies and we can walk all over anything in the field, plus we have the option of switching to private frequencies.
There comes a point when you lose patience with cheap comms. Good comms make a BIG difference in the field, especially when you're using a CnC setup where range matters.
I've tried all the cheap shit, including commercial throat mics and I find the best setup is the above mentioned Kenwood radio with the acoustic coil ear bud (Scarecrow sells 'em).
