Wait, wait. Now, did you HOT GLUE the wire? I hope I understood that wrong.

Semi-auto (or lack thereof) is caused by the cutoff lever. It's a small lever that rises when the sector gear finishes a revolution, and pushes the trigger trolley (the part that completes the circuit when you press the trigger) up and out of the way. If that part is work down or cannot more freely, it won't be able to fulfill it's role.

A second, less probable, cause may be the selector itself that is acting as if full auto is selected when you put it on semi, disengaging the cutoff lever and causing the problem you have.

That's where I'd check first.
