He is saying if you want to shim your gear box, use the bevel shimming method where you start with aligning the bevel and pinion gear perfectly. But leave a small amount of play with the bevel gear.
Removing the bearings in the piston will help reduce the fps slightly because the spring will not be as compressed as if the bearings were in the piston.
