Whatever you do, do not remove the release tooth on the piston. All of the shear load on the piston rests on that metal tooth, allowing it to rest on a plastic tooth will destroy your piston.
I would recommend using a circular file to widen opening in the piston and also do what lurkingknight recommended - ensuring that the piston slides freely with the mechbox closed.
