On the wood issue, the issue AK74s now all have black polymer furniture. However, there is some evidence to show that experienced troops in Chechnya have been using older AKMs (wood furniture), because of it's harder hitting 7.62mm x 39mm ammunition.
Wooden furnitured AK74 series don't seem to be issue in the European theatre any longer, and outside of Europe the AKM/AKMS seems to - still - be the predominant AK on offer.
