Oh, mechanically they might as well be powered by magic and a team of tiny gnomes, but that's just airsoft for you.
The slide and frame both lack levers and buttons and gnobs and other chunky bits for you to catch your hands and fingers on, which allows you to smoothly and quickly draw the weapon (no snags on equipment or clothing) and manipulate the action through gross muscle movements. It's "ugly" because it's simple and in that exterior simplicity is the potential for real speed.
